In my case, being a woman in school was never a challenge. For the most part, I think college promotes a sense of openness, diversity, and freedom. However, entering the workforce through internships and freelancing did send some obstacles my way. I can’t speak for all Asian women, but I sometimes find it difficult to challenge others, speak up, or negotiate due to my culture’s reverence for authority and experience. I am by no means a passive person, but somehow this aspect of my culture weasels its way into how I perform at work. Even though it’s been a challenge, I’m definitely becoming more assured and confident.
